First Week

We left home June 17 and traveled to Sanilac County Park at Forester, Michigan for the Fulton, Hobbs annual reunion, Jeannette’s family.  After enjoying the company of about 27 first cousins and their kids and grandkids, we left Monday, June 19 and headed west.  Our first stop was an impromptu stop at Amana Colonies RV park in Iowa.  That left us about two hours out of Des Moines where we met our grandson, Zack, for lunch.  He is interning with John Deere there this summer.
From there we headed west to the Missouri river and then north to Fargo, ND where we overnighted in a WalMart/Sams parking lot.  Lots of good looking corn and beans in our Great Plains.  From Fargo, we turned west and headed for Fort Peck Dam in Montana.  We deviated from the planned route and visited the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt NP in North Dakota and then to Fort Union Trading Post on the state line and on the Missouri River, just upriver from the confluence of the Missouri and the Yellowstone.  We did make Fort Peck Dam for the overnight.
Today, we came across Montana to Glacier NP via Route 2.  We saw a lot of really dry cropland and talked to a farmer that said they had not had any appreciable rain for two and a half months.  He raises cattle and makes hay and does not have enough growth to make hay at this point.

When we got to Two Medicine campground, we were surprised that it was already full so we are camping just outside the entrance until morning when we will go sit at the check in to snap up a site that will be Jeannette’s home for the next 10 days.  I will be hiking with Matt and Hunter and their Scout troop at the Montana Boy Scout High Adventure Base, MOHAB.
As I started this the day we arrived in Glacier, I will update the events.  After getting in and setting up, we have been enjoying the splendor of Glacier.  Scenery is fantastic.  The first night in, the temp overnight was 38 degrees.  We just have to snuggle more to keep warm.  We have been keeping in touch with Matt as they make their way to MOHAB and will arrive in about 1 1/2 hours.  We are passing through East Glacier Park on the way there and will get there abut 5:30.  Jeannette is looking forward to the week alone with Sparky and relaxing.  For those wondering, we have not seen any bears yet but lots of buffalo.  Still looking for our first moose.
A couple of pictures will be on the next edition.

  3. We did miss you for the reunion.

I read up on the Amana colonies some time ago. It was an interesting experiment in Christian community.
